The Taoiseach and Tánaiste will brief cabinet Ministers on the latest Brexit updates this morning as efforts continue to reach a last minute deal.

Leo Varadkar is expected to emphasise the scale of the challenge to redraft a legally binding treaty and get agreement on it in the next two days.

Meanwhile, foreign affairs ministers from across Europe are meeting in Luxembourg again to pave the way for the bigger European Council meeting later this week.

Councillors who bowed out at May's local elections are to receive retirement gratuities of around €6m in total.

Seventeen of them will get at least €70,000 each, according to details released under the Freedom of Information Act.

Topping the list is Longford's Luie McEntire, who was paid just under €80,000 in June.

A new UNICEF report has found that 200 million children globally are undernourished or overweight.

The worldwide study, the largest of its kind in the 21st century, says the food system is failing children.

The report says the problem is caused by poverty, climate change and poor diet - including low breastfeeding rates.

The Tánaiste will raise the case of Emma DeSouza when he meets the Northern Ireland Secretary of State later.

It follows an immigration tribunal ruling on Monday against the Derry woman, which stated people born in the North are British.

Fianna Fáil says the judgment has profound implications for the Good Friday Agreement - a treaty which allows people in the north to identify as British, Irish or both.

US President Donald Trump has told the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to end the incursion into Syria, as the US announced sanctions against Turkey.

Vice President Mike Pence said Mr Trump spoke directly to President Erdogan - demanding an immediate ceasefire and talks with Kurdish forces.

He, along with national security adviser Robert O'Brien, is being sent to Ankara as soon as possible to try to negotiate an end to the fighting.
