More than 800 children were living in emergency accommodation in Dublin last month - a 40% increase on last June's figures.

Barnardos says while the Government has taken some steps to tackle homelessness, 371 families are still affected in the capital.

The organisation says sometimes parents are forced to leave their children in care because they are unable to secure appropriate housing.

Head of Advocacy at Barnardos June Tinsley says there are still many issues with the private rented sector:

Yesterday it was reported that only two-thirds of land which is earmarked for homes in Dublin is correctly zoned.

The Sunday Independent says an email from a Department of the Environment official confirms that 30,000 units can be built on available land. But the figure being publicly cited is 46,000 homes. You can read more on that story here.

Last month it was revealed that the European Investment Bank (EIB) is to provide Ireland with a 25-year loan for a social housing programme. The deal is expected to be worth €300m.
