Ireland's historical landmarks are opening their doors for National Heritage Week, which gets underway today.

More than 1,800 events are taking place across the island - with 'high Nelly' bicycle trips, linen making and steam engine rides just some of the activities in store.

Other events being organised between now and August 30th include exhibitions, talks & lectures, special walks, film screenings, guided tours, workshops and much more.

The majority of the events are free and full details are available on the Heritage Week website.

Over 400,000 people are expected to take part over the course of the week, and co-ordinator Niamh Donnellan says there is something for everyone:
