There are more than 150 unsolved murders on garda books.
A review initiated by the Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan shows the 'cold case murders' over the last twenty years are mainly in Dublin and are gangland related.
According to the Sunday Independent, almost half of the unsolved cold cases are in the Garda Western Division in Dublin, which covers an area from Finglas and Coolock to Clondalkin and Ballyfermot.
The paper reports that gardaí have 'substantial suspicions and intelligence' about many of the 'cold cases', but the investigations have failed to progress past the early stages.
The Garda Eastern Division, based in Dun Laoghaire, is reported to be the only division in the capital without any gangland murders.
The conviction rate for gang-related killings is said to be less than one in ten.
