The Irish surfer who has been missing off the coast of Australia has been named as Stuart Butler (19).

Fears are growing for the Dubliner who was caught in a riptide in Byron Bay in New South Wales on Saturday.

He had gone to the beach with two friends, who also got into difficulty but were later rescued.

One man (26) was found in the water a short distance away on Saturday unhurt, while the other (20) was found on rocks by rescuers a short time later and had suffered minor injuries.

Inspector Jim Kain said on Sunday "They had an extensive search conducted today, air and sea, as well as combing the rock face there at the lighthouse".

"At this stage, no success" he added.

Members of Byron Bay police, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and local volunteers are all involved in the search effort. It will resume at about 10pm tonight (Irish time) after being called off due to low light.
