Historic monuments and famous buildings around the world lit up in the colours of Belgian flag last night in tribute to victims of the terror attacks in Brussels.

Shows of solidarity were evident across the Belgian capital on Tuesday as taxi drivers turned off their meters and citizens opened their doors to each other to offer a safe haven.

The Place de la Bourse in the city centre became a memorial scene as crowds gathered and left flowers and wrote tributes in chalk in the wake of the bomb attacks that left 34 people dead and over 200 injured.

This solidarity was evident across the globe as many of the world’s most famous buildings were illuminated in the colours of the Belgian flag.

Rome's famous Trevi Fountain.

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

One World Trade Center in New York City. Some were critical of the effort, saying it appeared to be lit up in the wrong colours. Also in New York, the Empire State Building went dark as a mark of respect.

The palace of Culture in Warsaw.

Capitoline Hill in Rome.

The Royal Palace in Amsterdam.
