Met Eireann has issued a weather warning for Saturday. The yellow warning is ahead of a “spell of heavy rain” in Munster, Connacht and Leinster on Saturday.

“A spell of heavy rain is forecast for Saturday, mainly affecting Munster, Connacht and Leinster,” Met Eireann says.

“Details of this event are still uncertain, follow up warnings will be issued during Friday morning.”

Flooding is still severely affecting many areas of the country, with the Defence Forces and the Red Cross assisting in the emergency in areas such as Athlone and parts of Limerick and Clare.

Compared to last weekend, Evelyn Cusack of Met Eireann says the amount will likely not reach the same levels. Last weekend was the first time since the colour coded warning system came into place that Met Eireann have issued a red warning for rainfall.

“Relative to last weekend, last weekend we had about 10mm and in some mountain rainfall stations 200mm,” she said.

“The prediction for this weekend will be 80 in mountains, perhaps higher,” she said, adding that there would be more accurate information available on Friday.
