While the body of Kevin Kearney was found in a lake in north Belfast shortly after 3:30pm yesterday.

A dissident republican earlier claimed responsibility in an interview with the Irish News newspaper.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Justyn Galloway said "Mr. Kearney followed his usual weekday routine by taking his daughter to school, then returning home and at approximately 9am took his two dogs for a walk in Alexandra Park".

The Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland has condemned the murder. Martin McGuinness of Sinn Féin tweeted a call for the unreserved condemnation of the murder and insisted that society rejects those responsible.

While speaking in Dublin, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore said "I want to offer sincere sympathies to the families of the two men who have been murdered in North Belfast and in Derry. I utterly condemn these vicious, brutal and cowardly murders".

"The people who claim responsibility for this have no mandate and their actions lead nowhere" he added.

He also said the Garda Siochána will continue to work closely with the PSNI.
