A man in his 40s is in a serious condition after an assault in Dublin early this morning.

The attack happened on Cork Street just after midnight and the man was rushed to St James's Hospital where he is currently being treated.

A 20 year old man was arrested a short time later and is being held for questioning at Kevin Street Garda Station.

Cork Street was closed while a technical examination was carried out but has since reopened.
