A man (70) has died in a road collision in Co Monaghan.

It is believed the car the man was driving hit a tractor near Castleblaney on the Ballybay to Carrickmacross Road.

It happened shortly before 6pm yesterday evening.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A man (54) who was driving the tractor was uninjured.

The stretch of road is closed this morning and gardaí at Carrickmacross are appealing for witnesses.
