CCTV footage from the Market Cross Shopping Centre in Kilkenny is being examined by gardai investigating the killing of a woman. Maireád Moran (28) was stabbed to death at the shop where she worked last night.

She was originally from Kilmoganny. She was attacked while she worked at a shop in the Market Cross centre at around 8:30pm and died later in St, Luke's Hospital.

It is understood she suffered several knife wounds before her attacker fled the scene.

A man (27) was arrested shortly afterwards and is still being questioned by gardai.

It is also understood that a taxi which the man may have travelled in is being forensically examined.

These locals spoke of their shock over the stabbing.

Deputy Editor of the Kilkenny People newspaper, Sean Keane, says witnesses have described how the woman was stabbed after a man entered the premises.

Mayor of Kilkenny Martin Brett expressed his sympathy to the Moran family.
