A man has been arrested following a stabbing incident in Ballina, Co Mayo in the early hours of this morning.

Midwest radio report that a local man in his 50's sustained a number of stab wounds in what Gardai described as an alleged serious assault.

The victim was rushed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where he remains in a critical condition.

The incident occurred at a house in Tom Clarke Place between 3.30 and 4.15 am this morning.

Gardai arrested a man in the Ballina area this afternoon, he's being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
