An Argentinian man has appeared in court in Sydney charged in connection with an alleged assault that has left an Irish man in an induced coma.

30-year-old Adrian Gabriel Martinez was charged with "recklessly causing grievous bodily harm" to Jason Cierans.

The 29-year-old Cork man was knocked unconscious during the incident outside a bar in the Bondi Junction area of Sydney yesterday.

Mr Cierans is believed to have suffered a serious head injury, causing swelling of the brain. Sydney Morning Herald reports he is in a critical but stable condition.

A 27-year-old man has also been charged with affray following the incident. He was granted conditional bail and will appear in court on Monday.

The two men and the victim are not believed to be known to each other, police have said.
