The Tanaiste is defending the work of Ministers in the Department of Health.

Fianna Fail claims there is a “fractured working relationship” between the Health Minister James Reilly and the Junior Health Minister Roisin Shortall.

Last night Minister Reilly won the support of the Dail in a vote of confidence.

However Minister Shortall did not actually state her confidence in him during a 4-minute speech.

Speaking in the Dail Eamon Gilmore says there is a strong team in the Department of Health getting on with the job of repairing the health system.

“This government is in the process of repairing that” he said.

“We have a strong team in the Department of Health – led by Minister Reilly, Minister Shorthall and Minister Lynch”.

“They are getting on with the job of repairing the health service that you broke”.

“They are going to deliver on that; I expect that they will deliver and I’m confident that they will deliver” he added.

A new 260 kilometre electricity interconnector linking Ireland and Britain has opened in Co. Meath.

The East-West interconnector has the capacity to transport 500 megawatts of energy.

That is enough to power 300,000 homes.

The 600 million euro project was developed by EirGrid.

It has come in on time and under budget and will allow for the sale of electricity between Ireland and Britain for the first time.

Chief Executive of EirGrid Dermot Byrne says customers will ultimately see the benefits through cheaper energy bills.

“Well the benefits that will flow from this  – and the case for this is well proven economically – but what this will do is bring competition to bear in the Irish wholesale energy market” he said.

“That will put downward pressure on prices, which counter-act some of the upward pressures”.

“So yes – there will be benefits flowing from this” he added.
