As the same-sex marriage debate enters its final few days The Right Hook brought together some of the most vocal figures from both sides of the debate to face off over what has become an increasingly fractious and muddied discussion.
John Waters of First Families First, former TD Pat Carey, Grainne Healy of Yes Equality and senior counsel Patrick Treacy – who is calling for a No vote – joined George Hook this evening for a debate in front of a live audience in the Limerick Strand Hotel.
While the no campaign continues to insist that providing for same-sex marriage will inevitably lead to children being raised without a mother or father, which they say is not the ideal environment, while the Yes side continues to argue that the vote is on extending the right to marry, and nothing else.
With the gap between the sides narrowing according to recent polls. Mr Waters told George he believes the Yes vote “is clearly in freefall.”
“You’d have to admit that from the No side there is a mountain to climb,” he said.
“I think the figures may be masking reality, there are variables in the picture that we are not accounting for.
“I think it’ll be a lot closer than people imagine,” he added.
