A 95-year-old Limerick man has landed his first international modelling contract.

Australian designer Oodie wasted no time in signing up Jim Healy after he pulled on one of their hooded dressing gowns for the first time.

His son Brian told Newstalk Breakfast he wasn't so sure about the dressing gown when it first arrived but Jim is really feeling the benefit as the winter settles in.

“I saw the product and I thought, you know what, coming into the cold winter nights this would be perfect for Jim, so we got some,” he said.

“When they arrived in the post, we just took a photograph and Jim didn’t really want to wear it, he said, ‘ah no there is a hood on it and it looks awkward and stuff’ – but when he actually put it on he fell in love with it; he could feel the benefit of it straight away.”

He said the family sent a photograph of Jim in his new gown to the company and almost immediately received an offer from one of their executives.

Jim told the show he is enjoying his new role – even if he was “not expecting it at my age.”

“it’s a lovely and comfortable garment and all that,” he said, noting that he hopes the contract will earn him a similar wage to the rest of the world’s top models.

Brian said his father could have a bright future ahead in the industry.

“That is an ongoing process now,” he said. “There may be more breaking news in the future.

“Jim might be refusing to get out of bed early in the morning for less than a certain amount of money.”

Asked whether he would accept a spot on the Oprah Winfrey Show in the coming weeks, Jim said that would be “good enough.”

“That would be fine,” he said “That would be excellent, yes.”
