Elections 14 has delivered a damning verdict on Labour, and the Taoiseach's admitted the election results show today was not a good day for people in Government.

The junior coalition partner faces a wipe-out in some local authorities, including Cork City. It is also looks like they will not win any European seat.

Deputy leader of the Labour Party Joan Burton told our reporter at the count centre in Citywest, Dublin, that the electorate had delivered a 'shellacking' to the party:

Minister Pat Rabbitte called for a renegotiation of the Programme for Government:

Meanwhile, the Socialist Party has won the seat in the Dublin West By-election, and Fine Gael's Gabrielle McFadden has taken the seat vacated by her late sister Nicky in the Longford Westmeath By-election.

Local elections

Labour are suffering too in the local election results - with just four seats out of the just over 202 filled so far.

Fine Gael too are suffering, though not to the same extent.

Approaching midnight on Saturday, the local election picture looks like this.

 Big winners

Counting of the European elections doesn't take place until tomorrow - but Sinn Féin and Independents will be the big winners there.

Attention tomorrow will switch to the European elections - Fine Gael confident they can hold on to four of the 11 MEPs - Sinn Féin are on course to elect three, and Labour face another wipeout.
