New figures released by the Immigrant Council of Ireland show that immigrants coming to Ireland are far less likely to become citizens than in other EU countries.

Just 13% of immigrants here become full citizens, compared to 34% in the rest of Europe.

The Immigrant Council of Ireland says it's identified a number of barriers to immigration in Ireland. 

Chief Executive, Denise Charlton, says: "Those who are succeed in being naturalised are more often employed, less often overqualified for their jobs, have better housing conditions and have less difficulty paying household expenses.

"This report highlights that despite the positive media coverage and feel good factor of the citizenship ceremonies, which the Immigrant Council campaigned to have introduced, we still have work to do in this area," she said.

The Immigrant Council of Ireland's Senior Solicitor, Hilkka Becker, says there's a lack of transparency in our immigration system.
