A jury has failed to reach a verdict in the trial of a young man accused of murdering a German student in south Dublin.
It comes a day after his friend was found guilty of stabbing Thomas Heinrich to death outside his apartment on St. Anthony's Road in Rialto two years ago.
Thomas Heinrich died after being stabbed three times during a fight outside his apartment in the early hours of December 1st, 2012.
His friend Robert Rinker underwent emergency surgery after suffering multiple stab wounds but has since made a full recovery.
Yesterday evening the jurors found Wesley Kelly of St. Anthony's Road in Rialto guilty of assault causing harm to Mr. Rinker.
They returned after lunchtime today to consider whether he was guilty of murdering Thomas Heinrich. But after deliberating for a little over 10 hours in total, they failed to reach agreement.
Yesterday, Mr. Kelly's co-accused (17), who cannot be named because of his age, was found guilty on both counts.
A sentencing date has been pencilled in for next month and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will now have to decide whether to pursue a retrial in the case of Mr. Kelly's murder charge.
