The jury in the Adrian Donohoe murder trial has been shown a photo of his gun still holstered to his side after he was shot dead during a robbery in Co Louth.

Aaron Brady of New Road, Crossmaglen, Co Armagh denies the capital murder of Detective Garda Donohoe and has also pleaded not guilty to a robbery charge.

The prosecution say Aaron Brady, who was 21-years-old at the time, was the shooter.

He’s also accused of robbing €7,000 during what the prosecuting barrister Brendan Grehan described earlier this week as a “slick and highly organised operation”.

Today, the jurors were shown photos of a burnt-out car believed to be the getaway car used by the raiders.

It was found on a rural laneway near a forest in Armagh.

They were also shown a photo of a spent cartridge shell found near the unmarked Garda car that Detective Donohoe and a colleague used for their armed escort.

They’d been assigned to protect a convoy containing the takings from four credit unions as it made its way to Dundalk for safe deposit.

Mr Grehan told the jury in his opening address that Detective Donohoe was shot before he even had time to draw his weapon, and a photo of his firearm still holstered and attached to his clothing was shown on large screens in the courtroom today.

The trial will resume hearing evidence tomorrow morning.
