A Dublin judge has warned that a 'large number' of potential jurors will be needed for the trial of 3 former Anglo Irish Bank Directors. They are charged in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the bank.

They are former chairman Sean FitzPatrick of Whitshed Road in Greystones, 62-year-old former Finance Director Willie McAteer and 50 year-old former Managing Director Pat Whelan.

The first of 12 volumes of evidence was served on Mr. FitzPatrick last week.

He is accused of making false, misleading or deceptive statements about his personal loans to the bank's auditors, Ernst and Young between 2002 and 2007. The amount on the final charge is €139.8 million.

Alleged unlawful financial assistance

He is also facing 16 other charges of giving unlawful financial assistance to 16 individuals for the purpose of buying shares in Anglo Irish Bank.

The same 16 allegations are also made against Mr. McAteer and Mr. Whelan.

The case was listed for mention at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today. Judge Mary Ellen Ring has advised that because of the 'considerable length' of the trial a large jury panel would be needed to choose from.

The case is expected to begin in January 2014. It could take up to 6 months.
