When signs with pink love heats began appearing around the town of Welland in Canada, local reporter Maryanne Firth began investigating.

First appearing in late April, the signs contained no message and no one came forward to claim them, even after she published an article looking for information. Firth was stumped.

But last week there was a break in the story - new signs appeared in a park suggesting that something big was going to happen on Sunday afternoon.

Arriving at the park, she approached a large tent along with a crowd of other curious locals. Inside was a fully-suited man with a box on his head bearing the same pink heart symbol.

And after handing her a bouquet of flowers, he revealed himself to be none other than her boyfriend, bending down on one knee and proposing on the spot.

In her own article, Firth describes her amazement:

"He knew I'd see the signs. He knew I'd be curious. And he knew my nose for news would drive me to unearth the secret. How he kept it from me all this time, I'll never know."
