The United States claims they have killed the Islamic State finance chief in an airstrike.

Muwaffaq Mustafa Mohammed al-Karmoush, aka Abu Salah, was one of three senior leaders of the group killed in a strike that took place in “recent weeks,” the BBC reports.

US military spokesman Col Steve Warren said Abu Salah was “one of the most senior and experienced members of” the Islamic State financial network – which is known to be highly sophisticated and crucial to the group’s continuing success in Syria and Iraq.

"Killing him and his predecessors exhausts the knowledge and talent needed to co-ordinate funding within the organisation," Col Warren said.

The other men killed were Abu Mariam, a senior extortion official, and Abu Waqman al-Tunis, who was responsible for co-ordinating the transfer of people, weapons and money for IS.
