An Irish scientist has collected the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Dr William C Campbell, born in Donegal, collected the award at a ceremony in Stockholm this evening.
Dr Campbell was honoured for his work in tackling infections linked to roundworm – work that millions of people around the world benefit from each year.

He shares the award with two others – with Campbell and Satoshi Omura sharing one half of the award “for their discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites”, and the other half going to Youyou Tu, for her work on Malaria therapy.
Campbell was born in Donegal, in the town of Ramelton, in 1930. He graduated from Trinity College in 1952, earning a degree in Zoology. After that he over to the US, on a Fulbright Scholarship, where he has lived since, gaining US citizenship.
