The Transport Minister says the Railway Safety Commission has told him they will up the number of inspections as part of efforts to address the concerns. The increased inspections will be for DART and inter-city services.

Barry Kenny from Irish Rail says the company is already in constant contact with the RSC about this issue. He explains, "We monitor our train sizes at all times and will continue to do so, and indeed have increased the number of trains - particularly DARTs - to ensure we are providing adequate capacity".

In other public transport safety news, it is reported that Gardaí in Dublin are to mount a crackdown on motorists breaking red lights and causing Luas collisions.

Last year there were 22 incidents, while this year that number has risen to 36. More than half are caused by drivers illegally passing red lights, with the majority of crashes on the Red Line.

According to the Irish Independent today, Gardaí are to get tough by patrolling the Queen Street, Blackhall Place and Belgard Road junctions in particular.
