The 15 year old from Letterkenny, Co. Donegal entered the Doodle 4 Google competition that asked students to draw a ‘my invention’ inspired doodle.

Over 100,000 online votes were cast to whittle the entries to the competition down. Annie beat off 74 other children at Google Headquarters in Dublin yesterday and was selected as the overall winner.

The student from St. Bernadette’s Special School in Letterkenny is mesmerised by aeroplanes and turned the infamous Google logo into an orange and pink jumbo jet.

Kevin Laughlin, a Google professional doodler, travelled from America and presented Annie with a Chromebook, €5,000 academic scholarship and €10,000 technology grant for her school and teacher Kathy Hamilton.

Laughlin said the competition, now in its fifth year, is one of the most hotly contested competitions every year.

“It was difficult to pick the overall winner but in the end I found Annie’s simplicity and restraint delightful and compelling.”

Newstalk spoke to Annie’s Mum, Bernie who said she was delighted with the win.

“Annie was inspired to draw the plane because her sister lives in Canada. We went to see her last year and it was her first time outside of Ireland and on an aeroplane.”
