Forensic experts are investigating after a human skull was found on a motorway sliproad, police have said.
The gruesome discovery was made during a "survey" of the embankment of the M54 at junction four in Telford, Shropshire.
The eastbound slipbound was shut following the incident, although at least one of the lanes later re-opened.
The origins are of the skull are not yet known.
In a statement, the West Mercia force said: "Police can confirm a human skull was uncovered at the roundabout at junction four of the M54 in Telford.
"Police were called at 1.26pm after the discovery was made during a survey of the embankment.
"Forensic enquiries are ongoing at the scene.
"The Highways Agency are also in attendance, and one lane the slip road to the M54 is currently closed."
