The HSE will pay a Harvard professor over €50,000 to give a class on value. Prof Robert S Kaplan will give a two-day masterclass in Dublin between May 15 and 16 on Value in Healthcare, according to the Irish Times.

The two-day event will cost a total of €150,000 and Prof Kaplan will participate in 8 sessions, with a total time of roughly six hours.

The event will be attended by 470 people, with a per person cost of €319.

“Considering the calibre of speakers, this method is immensely cost-effective for the quality of training provided,” the HSE said.

The HSE also told the Irish Times that the event was sponsored by companies sourced by Investnet Healthcare. Several of those companies, the HSE admits, are its suppliers.

“This approach was chosen to assist with, and hopefully cover, the costs of the event, but also to allow some distance and reduce any perceived conflict of interest,” the HSE said.

The HSE said there were “robust” protocols to “eliminate any potential conflict of interest”.

Prof Kaplan said it is not his “position to judge” whether his fee represents good value for the HSE. Prof Kaplan is the Marvin Bower professor of leadership development Emeritus at theHarvard Business School.
