The Dublin Midlands Regional Hospital Group (DMRHG) has said “lessons have been learned” following the awarding of €9m for a girl injured at birth at Portlaoise Hospital.
Roisín Conroy from Dysart in Portlaoise has cerebral palsy, is wheelchair-bound and can only communicate with her eyes.
She was previously awarded €2.6m, meaning today's ruling brings the total to €11.6m
The HSE previously apologised for the significant failings in the care of the now 14-year-old, and today Dr. Susan O’Reilly, Chief Executive of the DMRHG said the group “wishes to restate that sincere apology once again.”
“The HSE fully appreciated that neither this apology nor the financial compensation granted by the Court can negate the suffering and distress experienced by Roisin and her family,” Dr O’Reilly said.
“Investments in staff recruitment and training and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the HSE and the Coombe’s Woman’s and Infants University Hospital in March 2015 to establish the country’s first managed maternity network,” she added.
The DMHRG and HSE is “confident that the Midlands Regional Hospital at Portlaoise provides a safe level of service to its patients in the Midlands area today,” she said.
