As Lego rapidly approaches the production of its 500 billionth brick, one designer has figured out what could be built by connecting all those iconic blocks.

You can read all the calculations at Movoto’s blog, but the informative figures were determined by working out the square footage and floors of the buildings in question, then calculating how many standard Lego bricks would be needed to recreate them. You could, for example, built 46,000 medium-sized houses – enough to house the population of a small city – or 74 Empire State Buildings.

Perhaps the most surprising figure is that you’d only be able to make a single Great Pyramid of Giza. That’s because it’s a predominantly solid structure, and that enitre volume would need to be filled by little bricks in a world of elaborate Lego architecture. Goes to show just how remarkable the Great Pyramid's completion was in the first place.
