A lot more could be done to tackle homelessness according to Dublin's Lord Mayor.

New figures show that more than 2,100 adults and 1,300 children accessed emergency accommodation every night in the capital between July and September this year.

Dublin's Lord Mayor Criona Ni Dhalaigh says more needs to be done to prevent another tragedy.

Today marks a year since 43-year-old Jonathan Corrie was found dead in a doorway near the Dáil, prompting an outcry over services for homeless people.

But in that year, the situation has gotten worse.

Fr Peter McVerry works with homeless people, and says that families are increasingly becoming homeless.

According to the Dublin Region Homeless Executive, more than 2,100 adults and almost 1,300 children are accessing emergency accommodation every night.

They have opened up 175 extra beds for the winter.

Over €100m has been allocated by the Government in the last year to deal with homelessness and new rules have been introduced in a bid to control spiraling rents.

A rally will march in Dublin from the GPO this evening at 5.00pm and finish at Leinster House, close to the site of Mr Corrie's death.
