The head of the Road Safety Authority says the speed limit on rural Irish roads is 'way too high'.
Speaking to the Sunday Show earlier today, Liz O'Donnell confirmed there have been 85 lives lost on our roads so far this year - with five of those deaths last weekend alone.
Speed is still a common cause of many accidents and the Transport Minister has ordered a review of speed limits around the country.
RSA chairperson Liz O'Donnell also wants to see Paschal Donohoe follow through on plans to remove 80km per hour signs from rural lanes:
Earlier this year, Minister Donohoe introduced a new rural road sign, which is a white circle with a black diagonal stripe.
It means drivers can use their own judgement in deciding what speed to drive at - though it must be below the limit for the area.
"Urban slow zones" are also being introduced in residential areas with 30 kilometre an hour speed limits. Further rules later this year will give the option of a 20 kilometre limit.
