The Garda Ombudsman Commission is to open an investigation into an incident involving a garda and a homeless man in Dublin last week.
It is after a video of the altercation posted online was widely shared across social media.
In the video, which was posted online on Sunday, a garda appears to have his foot on the leg of a man who is lying on the ground on Henry Street in the city centre.
It is also claimed the Garda used pepper spray on the man after he was handcuffed.
In a statement, released this evening, GSOC says they'll investigate the incident based on the level of public disquiet it generated.
While the Commission considers that it is in the public interest.
A superintendent from outside of the division has been appointed to carry out an internal investigation.
