A group of Independent TDs have launched a campaign to reform the Seanad rather than abolish it.

Shane Ross, Mattie McGrath, Maureen O'Sullivan and Finian McGrath have fought to fight plans by the coalition to scrap the upper house.

They have acknowledged that the Seanad in its current form is not fit for purpose.

But Maureen O'Sullivan says just getting rid of it is not the right thing to do.

"This abolition of the Senate is being presented as the cure to all the ills and to all that's needed in political reform" she said.

" I do accept totally that the Senate is in need of reform - it's not democratic, it is elitist - but I think there is a major roll for the Senate in a democracy" she added.

Deputy Finian McGrath says the Taoiseach will face major opposition on his plans to scrap the Upper House.

He has vowed to fight the government everywhere on Seanad abolition.
