The number of assaults on Gardaí is being described as an "unacceptable occupational hazard".
Over 1,400 incidents of assaults or obstructing Gardaí have been recorded in the last five years.
84 incidents were reported between January and March of this year and if that trend continues a new high of 336 incidents could be recorded by the end of 2015.
Garda Representative Association President Dermot O’Brien spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime today and said it is time for new legislation to protect gardaí from assaults, and for members of the force to be allowed carry tazers to protect themselves.
"Gardai are not there to be assaulted," Mr O'Brien said, "they are there to protect."
