A few weeks ago we covered a story about the Nissan Leaf and its glow-in-the-dark paint. News has been released today by the manufacturer telling us that they have driven this glowing car on the luminous Smart Highway in Oss, Netherlands.

The world’s first glowing highway was conceived by Daan Roosegaarde. Its aim is to guide drivers in the dark and to save energy by taking away street lighting. The glowing patch is a 600 metre stretch on the N329 road. During the day the lines on the road absorb light and this gives an eight hour glow overnight.

Bringing the specially painted Nissan Leaf to this patch has made it the first time ever that a phosphorescent car has driven on a luminescent highway. Another fitting reason for this world’s first is that Nissan has seen an electric vehicle sales increase of 313 per cent in the Netherlands in the last year.

Daan Roosegaarde said, "The Glowing Lines on The Smart Highway replace standard street lighting to reduce electrical energy consumption. To have the world's first glow-in-the-dark car on our road is a privilege and it mirrors goals that we want to achieve with our Smart Highway."
