Rank and file gardai want new legislation to allow for the detention of drunk people until they have sobered up. The issue will be debated at the Garda Representative Association (GRA) annual conference in Killarney in Co. Kerry today.
Delegates say they want to be able to detain people arrested under the Public Order Act for their own safety.
Garda Michael Corcoran - from Angelsea Street Station in Cork City - is proposing the motion.
Yesterday, the interim Garda Commissioner said she is determined to tackle the area of white-collar crime.
Noirin O'Sullivan also said the level of resources being used will be reviewed.
While the GRA has also called for new legislation with tougher penalties to deter people from attacking gardaí.
