Gardai in Cork have intercepted an armed raid on a post office in the east of the county.

A man in his 30s was arrested in Aghada last night after he was seen wearing a balaclava and carrying a firearm in the vicinity of the local post-office.

Gardai in Midleton were alerted and backed up by members of the Regional Support Unit from Cork city they quickly moved in to disarm and arrest the suspect.

The man who's from Cork city is being questioned at Middleton Garda Station.
