The Tániste has condemned an attack in Dublin which left a man in his 30s dead.

Gardaí have named the man as Mark Desmond, originally from Ballyfermot.

Mr Desmond was shot in Griffeen Valley Park in Lucan at around 8pm last night - his body was discovered by a member of the public.

Mr Desmond was known to Gardaí and had a number of previous convictions.

The area has been preserved while gardaí continue to examine evidence. A second scene at nearby Hayden's Lane also remains sealed off after gardaí discovered a burnt out car in the area.

Officers are interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen anything unusual in or around the park between 6pm and 10pm last night.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald called the attack a “reminder of the callous disregard for human life displayed by people intent on murder and mayhem.”

“Every effort will be made to bring the perpetrators of this dreadful shooting to justice and we will face down those who mistakenly think they can get away with these evil acts,” she said.

Superintendent Liam Carolan from Blanchardstown Garda Station is appealing to anyone with information to come forward:

Anyone with information is asked to contact gardaí at Lucan Garda Station on 01 666 7300, the garda confidential telephone line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
