Up to 300 new gardaí are to be hired next year, with the first intake of 100 trainees expected to take place in July.

The first recruitment campaign in five years has been formally launched today by Justice Minister Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan at the Garda Training College.

A moratorium on the hiring of new officers has been place since in May 2009. The new campaign officially began at midnight last night.

Up to 300 trainees will be recruited before the end of 2014, with the first intake of 100 officers expected in July.

They will be assigned to Garda stations with full policing powers after 32 weeks.

Applications for the Garda jobs are now being accepted through the publicjobs dot ie website. The closing date is midnight on January 9th next.

The announcement was made today at the Templemore graduation of 93 new Garda Reserves - including Irish, Ukranian and Polish nationals.

The additional 71 men and 22 women brings the total number of reservists qualified to just over 1,100.

Minister  Shatter explains the recruitment process.
