Gardaí are investigating a fatal house fire in County Galway yesterday in which a woman in her 80s died.

It happened at around 10pm in Brierfield near Tuam.

It is understood there were three occupants inside the house at the time of the incident.

The body of a woman - in her 80s - was removed to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe where a post mortem will be carried out.

It is believed the two other people were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

The scene was preserved for a technical examination.
