Gardaí have confirmed that they had identified the man whose body was found dumped in a refuse chute in a Cork city apartment complex on Monday evening.

The dead man has been named as Liam Manley, 59, a long term resident of the Simon Community - who was originally from Baker's Road in Gurranebraher.

Gardai used dental records and DNA samples to confirm the man's identity who had previously lived at a Simon House on Boreenamanna Road.

A post mortem examination confirmed Mr Manley was the victim of an assault and gardaí upgraded their investigation to an 'unlawful killing'.

According to gardaí, Mr Manley had no known connection with the flat complex and gardaí are trying to establish if he entered the complex with someone he knew.

Liam Manley was last seen alive a week ago, on Friday, and detectives say forensic evidence from the area where the body was dumped will be vital to their investigation.

And they said that CCTV footage from the North Gate Apartments and surrounding area will also prove vital as they try to identify who assaulted him.
