Gardai have arrested a man who was hiding under Parnell Bridge in Cork.

It was reported someone was seen entering the water near the bridge at around 7.20 this morning and a full-scale search was mounted.

Coastguard and lifeboat units from Crosshaven were involved, along with a coastguard helicopter based in Waterford.

The 34 year old man from Cork City was found sitting on a support of the bridge.

Gardai were at the scene for a number of hours where a stand off took place.

However, following an hour of negotiations, Gardai coaxed him out and he was detained.
