A road traffic incident, which left a man in a serious condition in hospital, has been referred to the Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).
The collision - involving a car and a motorcycle - happened on the Cavan By-pass at around 5pm yesterday.
The male motorcyclist (44) was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where his condition is described as serious.
The male driver of the car (24) was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving. He is currently detained at Cavan garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
However it has now been referred to GSOC because it is reported that the car involved in the collision was being pursued by gardaí.
It is now the subject of an independent investigation.
The Garda Síochána will be investigating the dangerous driving and/or other offences that the driver of the car may have been involved in, while GSOC will be examining the conduct of the gardaí involved, to see whether the garda pursuit of the car was justified and proportionate.
