People over the age of 34 are being warned that if they do not take out health insurance in the next two months they will face higher premiums in the future.

The Health Minister Leo Varadkar will today launch an information campaign outlining changes to the community rating system.

From the 1st of May, those over 34 who buy health insurance for the first time will have to pay more.

It means an extra 2% loading for every year after the age of 34 when you sign up for health insurance for the first time.

Last week, the Health Minister said making health insurance affordable is the solution to our two-tier healthcare system.

Leo Varadkar says the packages being offered by insurance companies have become more affordable, and that the number of people who are taking out policies is on the rise.

Minister Varadkar also said that things are slowly improving in hospital Emergency Departments as the number of people waiting on trolleys is coming down.
