A French magazine says it will remove a report claiming the French President has been having an affair with a well-known actress from its website. 'Closer' had earlier stood by its story.

President Francois Hollande has threatened legal action over the allegation involving Julie Gayet (41), who appeared in one of his TV campaign adverts.

The publication printed seven pages of pictures taken outside a Paris apartment, including an image of a man it said was Mr. Hollande arriving on the back of a scooter, before leaving in the morning.

The gossip magazine also showed a woman, which it claimed was Gayet, arriving at the apartment at night.

However, Closer later said it would remove the report from its website at the request of Ms. Gayet.

Mr. Hollande (59) is not married but has a long-term partner, Valerie Trierweiler. He also has four children from a previous relationship with a senior member of his Socialist Party, Segolene Royal.
