Four people have been taken to hospital following a light aircraft crash in Co Wexford.

It happened at around 5.20pm on Thursday at Carne Beach near Carnsore Point.

The aircraft apparently had mechanical difficulties over the Irish Sea.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene, while the four people onboard were taken to hospital.

The two men are aged in their 20s and 50s and two women are both aged in their 30s.

They are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The pilot and co-pilot were airlifted to University Hospital Waterford by the Rescue Helicopter 117, while the other two people in the plane were transferred to the hospital by ambulance.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) and the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) have been notified.

The scene has been preserved and an investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway.
