Yes, we know that the year isn't quite finished yet, but we can probably all safely assume that Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn't going to end up on this list.
Every year there's always a few big budget movies that just get generally ignored by the cinema-going public, and with the average cost of blockbusters constantly going up and up, these "flops" are probably going to get more and more frequent.
The losses are calculated as a percentage return on the initial spend, so while smaller movies may seem to have lost less, the fraction that failed to recoup is much larger.
With the movies below, the general rule of thumb is that on top of the production budget, you can add another 50% for a promotional budget. So while it looks like some of these movies have made a return, in reality they're still in the red.
15. CRIMSON PEAK
Budget: $55 million
Box Office: $62.5 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Not really, it was actually pretty good, although spending that much money on a period-set gothic romanctic drama was always going to be a risk.
14. TOMORROWLAND
Budget: $190 million
Box Office: $209 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Not at all, coming from the director of The Incredibles and starring George Clooney in a vibrant, entertaining sci-fi action film. Although, again, that price-tag is pretty damned high.
13. JUPITER ASCENDING
Budget: $176 million
Box Office: $183.9 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Yes and no. It was original and big and brash and from the directors of The Matrix. But it was also bonkers and weird and campy, like a modern day Flash Gordon.
12. HOT TUB TIME MACHINE 2
Budget: $14 million
Box Office: $13.1 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Yes. Not every successful comedy needs a sequel.
11. PAN
Budget: $150 million
Box Office: $119.8 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Kind of. The film wasn't terrible, but what we got didn't warrant that much money being spent.
10. MORTDECAI
Budget: $60 million
Box Office: $47.3 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Yes. One of the worst films of the year, and arguably the career nadir point Johnny Depp. Which is saying something.
9. ALOHA
Budget: $37 million
Box Office: $26.3 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Yes. The director of Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire has fallen a long way from grace, and not even the pairing of Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone could save him.
8. WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS
Budget: $6 million
Box Office: $3.6 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Not at all, especially consider just how cheap it was to make. Plus it's got the so-hot-right-now Zac Efron and Emily Ratajkowski involved.
7. AMERICAN ULTRA
Budget: $28 million
Box Office: $15.4 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Maybe. While the stoner comedy version of The Bourne Identity with Jesse Eisenberg as a sleeper agent was a cute idea, the execution wasn't all that great.
6. SELF/LESS
Budget: $26 million
Box Office: $12.3 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Yes. Another poor decision by Ryan Reynolds, as this was basically a SyFy Channel movie masquerading as A-list worthy.
5. JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS
Budget: $5 million
Box Office: $2.3 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Yes. By changing the kitschy nature of the original cartoon and replacing it was a drab drama, they turned off old and new fans at the same time.
4. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Budget: $35 million
Box Office: $14.4 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Yes. It was an unfunny comedy. That is all.
3. BLACKHAT
Budget: $70 million
Box Office: $19.4 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Absolutely. From the director of Heat and The Insider, making a cyber-thriller with Chris Hemsworth, this should have been a slam-dunk. Instead it was just plain dull.
2. THE GUNMAN
Budget: $40 million
Box Office: $10.7 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? Not really. Maybe the world just isn't ready to see Sean Penn do his best Liam Neeson-in-Taken impression.
1. ROCK THE KASBAH
Budget: $15 million
Box Office: $2.9 million
Did It Deserve To Be A Flop? As much as we hate to say it, because we love Bill Murray, but yes. This was just a mess of a film.
