Patrick Egan has won the first Gold Medal on the opening day of the Special Olympics Ireland Games at the University Of Limerick.

The Gold was awarded in the 1,500 metres freestyle swimming.

1,500 athletes from all over Ireland are in Limerick to compete. Over 3,000 volunteers have been mobilised to ensure that these are the best Games yet.

The competition runs until Sunday June 15th and is open to the public. Special Olympics Ireland is encouraging people you to come along to the venues to cheer on our athletes and soak up the amazing atmosphere.

The Opening Ceremony took part in People's Park last night, and also - in a first for Special Olympics - saw the athletes and coaches take part in a colourful public street parade on O'Connell Street.

Speaking after the race, Patrick said he was thrilled with his win.
