The first COVID case has been confirmed at the athletes’ Olympic Village in Tokyo.
The patient is believed to be a games official from overseas. They are now isolating in a Tokyo hotel.
It comes just six days before the games are due to get underway.
It is the first confirmed case in the village – which organisers have called the "safest place" at the Games.
Thousands of athletes and officials are staying there for the duration of the event.
There will be no fans at the games after Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared a state of emergency due to surging COVID figures.
It had originally been hoped that locals would get the opportunity to watch the spectacle even if overseas fans were banned.
There has been significant opposition in Japan to the games going ahead as planned, amid a slow vaccine rollout and continued coronavirus outbreaks in several major cities.
Tokyo's state of emergency is set to continue until 22nd August.
On Thursday the country reported its highest daily case total in six months.
